Concert pitch

Article Abstract:

The 12-month Llangollen Eisteddfod Pavilion project, which involves the construction of the largest permanent tensioned fabric roof in the UK, is progressing well. Tillbury Douglas is carrying out the work under a 3 million pounds sterling contract, and is having to build the structure between Llangollen International Eisteddfods, which are held once a year. Because of this, the fabric roof has to be put up and the building waterproofed at a time of year when the weather is most unreliable, and the contractor is aware that there is extreme pressure for the work to be completed on time. The advantages of tensile fabric for roofing a large area such as this are discussed.

Digging for dirt

Article Abstract:

It is important to examine a site for pollution and to ascertain the cost to clean it up. A desk study is the first step which costs in between 2,000 pounds sterling and 3,000 pounds sterling for a site up to 2 hectares large. The study involves examining written, historical and photographic records and can reduce the cost of sampling contaminated land. Site sampling can cost in beween 100,000 pounds sterling and 200,000 pounds sterling for a site up to 2 hectares large. A site visit provides useful leads through street names and physical evidence.

Northern light

Article Abstract:

Swedish and UK construction practices are ultimately quite similar, according to Lars Bagler, project manager at Swedish concern Skanska. He is currently working in Manchester, England, where he is project director for the joint venture between Skanska and Costain that is constructing the Radisson SAS Hotel at Manchester airport. This project has combined UK and Swedish approaches. Bagler has been impressed with the UK emphasis on dedicating a single person to the job of programming projects.
