Faith in concrete

Article Abstract:

Concrete is now been imaginatively used in many building projects in Italy under the influence of engineer Vittorio Gigliotti, and he may even cause this trend to spread to the UK. His use of concrete in the new 28 million pounds sterling mosque and Islamic cultural centre in Rome, Italy, is receiving widespread praise, with 32 columns holding up the main roof of the mosque's prayer hall being made from precast concrete which looks like polished white marble. Precast 'branches' are also used in the walkways to the mosque and cultural centre, and the design draws on both Islamic and modern features.

Curing concrete

Article Abstract:

Cathodic protection, re-alkalisation and de-salination are new concrete repair methods. Cathodic protection is used in the UK to prolong the life of road bridges. It involves the continual passing of a low electricity current through the reinforcement concrete. Re-alkalisation was introduced in the UK in 1991 and involves stopping the carbonation of concrete by restoring its alkalinity to nearly that of new concrete. Electro-osmosis and electrolysis is used to re-alkanise. De-salination is used for concrete which has been attacked by chloride; chlorides are driven out of the concrete.

Raising the colours

Article Abstract:

The use of precast coloured concrete for building is limited in the UK. Insitu concrete can reduce the cost per metre squared by 300 pounds sterling as savings are made in the size and weight of the columns, beams and cladding. The variability in colour of coloured concrete is caused by a change of water content, compaction of the concrete at the top and bottom of the pour and the length of time the shuttering is in contact with the concrete. Textured finishes are successful is formliners are used correctly. Concrete also lends itself to tilt-up constuction.
