Article Abstract:

Areen Purchasing Services (APS) has built up a large and successful business supplying hotel builders with furniture, fittings and equipment right down to the level of cutlery or plastic flowers. APS now purchases over 50 million pounds sterling of goods each year, dealing with hotels throughout the world. Its worldwide purchasing power means it can cut costs for clients. APS monitors the whole procurement process by means of a sophisticated computer program which can track individual items through over 20 different stages, including tendering, order placing and production.

Numbers game

Article Abstract:

The European standard for the design of foundations, EC7, uses a limit state design method for assessing the safety of piles and earth retaining structures. This involves the use of partial factors and conforms to the standards set in other structural Eurocodes. However, the use of partial factors is criticised by soil engineers who claim the variation of soils makes it impossible to create a formula for the behaviour of all foundations. They also dispute the use of the method for assessing loading of piles.
