Shower power

Article Abstract:

Sprinklers are an effective means of putting out fires fast. A Jun 1992 UK Building Regulations amendment has stipulated that all new buildings over 30 metres high or 8 storeys high need sprinklers fitted. Incentives are offered to developers who install sprinklers in offices under 30 metres high. Buildings will be required to have a fire resistance level of 2 hours. The regulations will make buildings cheaper to construct and insure. Each sprinkler costs 50 pounds sterling and covers 12 metres squared of floor space. Sprinklers will be electronically linked with other fire systems in the future.

Live or let die

Article Abstract:

The CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building) has launched Bank Watch to help builders who have had unfair bank dealings such as refusal of further loans. Department of Employment statistics show that 4,000 constuction companies were liquidated in 1992. The CIOB intends to open a hotline for members and create an insolvency case file to be presented to banks. Its overall aim is to persuade the banks to adopt a long-term approach to construction firms. The Royal Bank of Scotland states that companies' statements of success are often uncertain and there is no evidence of cash-flow.

At-the-double glazing

Article Abstract:

'Fast track' techniques which have not been used in Poland before will allow Bovis Polska to build a 100 million pounds sterling high-tech glass factory for Pilkington in less than 18 months, a project which would have taken five years under the Polish system. This is one of the largest industrial construction projects in Poland, and has obliged local architects and trade contractors to become familiar with new construction techniques such as critical paths and just-in-time deliveries.
