Stanhope, the property developers, Director Peter Richards suggests building contractors are becoming more involved in the design stage of construction. He suggests materials will change rapidly during the next 10 years. He feels architects will have to increase their expertise as clients become more demanding. His brother Architect Lord Richard Rogers of Riverside agrees the quality of architects will improve. He feels the government will have an increasing influence on building design. Lord Rogers points out the environment has become a more important area of consideration in design.

Jolly Rogers: Sir Richard Rogers' architecture may be controversial, but the man himself is popular among his peers

Sir Richard Rogers' high tec architecture is in great demand with three quarters of his work currently in London. Projects include the Lloyd's Register of Shipping headquarters, luxury apartments in Battersea and headquarters for Daiwa Bank European and SmithKline Beecham. His practice, the Richard Rogers Partnership has a turnover of 9.2 million pounds sterling, and Sir Richard is vice chairman of the Arts Council and chairman of the Architecture Foundation.

Peter Birse is chairman of Birse Construction and has embraced a new management philosophy tailored for the company by industrial psychologists. The aim is to create a working environment that is more harmonious and productive, leaving behind the previously adversarial style. However there are still outstanding subcontractors claims and onerous DOM1 contract clauses to settle. Birse is aiming for the company to become the best in the business.
