European privacy fact finders visit U.S

Article Abstract:

The European Union's Article 31 committee was invited by the Dept of Commerce to Washington, DC, on a fact-finding mission to evaluate the effectiveness of US regulations to secure data sent from Europe to the US. The US and the EU are having difficulties on privacy issues. Failure to resolve the issues could result in a decision by the EU data protection directive to terminate data flow to the US. Both sides have agreed to let data flow continue for as long as negotiations are being held.

US, EU hope to complete privacy talks before US negotiator resigns March 31

Article Abstract:

The US and the European Union have come up with a deadline of March 31, 2000 for completing the privacy negotiations to ensure that Undersecretary of Commerce David Aaron will still be the chief negotiator of the US. Aaron, who has postponed his resignation, will try to finish all pending negotiations prior to his resignation on the said date. The point of contention between the two parties is the demand of Europeans for adequate protection of data they send to the US.

Privacy concerns weigh down long-form responses

Article Abstract:

The Census Bureau has announced a 12.5% point gap in the result of the 2000 census compared to the 1990 census. The difference, a large gap from the 6% reported for the 1990 census, was attributed to confusing messages in the media regarding privacy issues. Census Bureau director Kenneth Prewitt blamed messages that conveyed the idea that statistical information somehow threatens individual privacy for the low response rate.
