Exceedingly good

Article Abstract:

Azman Owens has designed the new Konditor & Cook bakery in a former Victorian fruit and vegetable warehouse behind Southwark Cathedral in London, England. It was necessary to accommodate the shop and its kitchens in only 150 sq mt of floor space on two long thin floors, and the interior, which reflects the area's commercial past, is strongly functional. The original wooden floor has been retained where possible, and other features include dark limestone counters and large plate-glass windows. The existing fruit and vegetable hatch at the front of the shop has been used as a lightwell for the basement kitchen.

Down to earth

Article Abstract:

The terminal building designed for the new airport in Sheffield, England, by DBS Architects consists of glass walls and a barrel-vaulted steel roof. A series of 12 mt span barrel vaults is used to support the 800 sq mt building, with the first phase comprising four vaults. There are plans to expand to up to seven vaults if the airport, which is used for private flights, is successful. The building is double height, allowing for the addition of a mezzanine at a later stage.
