Bonnie on Clyde

Article Abstract:

Architect Foster and Partner's design for Glasgow's new conference centre may never have been built without steelwork specialist Watson Steel's ability to develop the building's steel framework electronically. The 21.75 million pounds sterling, 3,000-seater, armadillo-shaped building is covered with a complex arrangement of eight large shells with a steel framework. Designing the building's complicated geometry was helped by using 3D computer modelling techniques. It is unlikely whether the building would have developed beyond the concept stage if computer technology had not been available.

Article Abstract:

The UK Ministry of Defence's Defence Housing Executive is placing strong emphasis on high quality housing, recognizing that this can be a valuable tool in boosting recruitment and morale. It is making the upgrading of the Ministry of Defence's 60,000 units a priority. At the Mathew and Avon estates in Tidworth, England, a five-year programme of work beginning in Aug 1999 will involve replacing 533 homes constructed in the 1960s with 484 new three- and four-bed homes with garages. Some of these homes will be used to test innovative features such as solar power and grey-water recycling.
