Hacker accesses Western Union card data

Article Abstract:

A hacker was able to access customer credit and debit card data of Western Union in Sep 2000 after employees who have performed maintenance on the company's website accidentaly left a part of the site unprotected. The company immediately alerted its customers of the break-in and disabled its website and launched an investigation. It also transmitted to appropriate financial institutions affected credit and debit card numbers to warn them to the possibility of credit card fraud. As of Sep 18, 2000, the companyhad not identified the hacker and no cases of credit card fraud had been reported.

Credit card processor settles over breach

Credit card processing firms Card Systems Inc. and Solidus Networks Inc. have agreed to implement information security program along with audits. The settlement was negotiated by Federal Trade Commission following a credit card information security breach lawsuit.
