DoubleClick and the costs of privacy

Article Abstract:

Internet ad network DoubleClick has become one of the most maligned online companies. It promised confidentiality to its customers, only to renege on its promise. Its problems started when it acquired Abacus and used the latter's database of identifiable records. DoubleClick is now being investigated by the FTC and the attorneys-general of New York and Michigan. Its stock price went down by 15% after it disclosed that it would have to spend a lot on privacy matters.

FTC's proposal for online privacy faces further tinkering in Congress

Article Abstract:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a new report regarding online privacy in May 2000, and recommended legislation because privacy self- regulation did not appear to be effective. The report was criticized by three Republican commissioners. An evaluation of the report suggests that it is too broad in calling for 'fair information practices,' as defined by the FTC, rather than requiring notice alone. It is also too narrow because any legislation should also apply to the offline business community. The FTC's definition of fair information practices is poor and its enforcement proposal is objectionable.
