Finishing school

Article Abstract:

Berkeley College Homes is using concrete panelized construction techniques for a 450-room hostel in south London, England, for students from the London School of Economics. Panel fabricator Bell & Webster has developed walls with a very smooth finish, thus requiring only a coat of paint. Window reveals are splayed back, letting in more light and having no edges to finish. Cable ducts run horizontally along corridors, while plumbing and drainage runs drop vertically through all seven floors.

Pump action

Article Abstract:

Projection plaster systems have the advantage of being less labour-intensive than traditional wet plastering. They also allow builders to offer a finish which potential purchasers regard more favourably than dry-lined walls. Projection plastering is already firmly established in northern Europe, and allows plastering work to be undertaken much more quickly than the methods used in the UK. This approach is to be tested by Persimmon Homes at its site in Ipswich, England, in autumn 1997.

DIY hard

Article Abstract:

Self-build is becoming a growing sector in the U.K. construction industry. It is worth 2 billion pounds sterling a year and represents some 15% of all new homes. Self builders normally enter the market to save money and because they find houses built by professional developers have little appeal. If housing developers are to attract potential self-builders, they must adopt new marketing strategies and be prepared to produce bespoke, custom-built houses for individual customers.
