Article Abstract:

Clare Frankl's late bid to become the first female president of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is due to her strong belief that the RIBA has lost direction and needs to refocus. Frankl points to the fact that the public has little understanding of what architects actually do. She says that the RIBA has not tackled the discrepancy between the diverse nature of the architect's job today, and the public image of architects as being who merely design and are not involved in 'real issues'. Frankl believes that the RIBA needs to change its membership criteria to widen its membership.

Action man

Article Abstract:

Electrician Pete Dyer worked on a Raleigh International project in Mongolia for 10 weeks where he was part of a team which built a health clinic. Dyer enjoyed the experience where he was the leader of the 14 Raleigh volunteers. He found the volunteers very keen to co-operate with his requests although there were some difficulties with the Mongolian workers over pay. Dyer also took part in a Raleigh project in Belize during 1992. He hopes his experiences of managing the project in Mongolia will help him further his career in the UK.
