Panel gains

Article Abstract:

City Lights' Ytong lightweight, concrete panel-wall system has been chosen by Laing-Bailey for the Heathrow Express Rail Link tunnel. This project has experienced serious delays, so it was necessary to find a way of fitting out the tunnel as quickly as possible. City Lights claimed that it would be possible to design, supply and install a concrete panel wall in only 17 weeks. The installation programme was originally scheduled to last 12 weeks, and this has been exceeded by only two weeks. Difficulties have arisen because of a number of unusual factors, including the curve of the cofferdam wall.

Ringleaders

Article Abstract:

There has been a strong rise in the use of call centres in the UK over recent years. Indeed, it is estimated that 1% of the working population is now employed in call centres. It is possible that a further 400 call centre buildings will be required in the period to 2000. At present, call centres are mainly located in traditional city-centre offices, but in the future call centres are more likely to be situated in out-of-town locations. There are a number of key factors associated with call centre design, including car parking, noise level management and service requirements.

External affairs

Article Abstract:

The outside cladding specified for buildings reflects changing trends in designs. In the 1980s, reflective and tinted glass curtain walls and solid facades were popular, but the current trend is towards clear glazing and shading systems as clients demand the maximum usage of natural daylight. An overview of developments in cladding materials is presented.
