Article Abstract:

Many UK construction materials suppliers have web sites, but most of these fail to provide any really useful information about product range, performance or availability. Indeed, some sites do no more than detail the company's financial structure. Web sites operated by construction materials suppliers will not be widely used within the construction industry until they can offer information such as typical product assemblies and composition. It would also be beneficial to include information about where and how materials are sourced and produced.

Top marks

Article Abstract:

The UK roofing industry is finally taking action against the long-standing problem of poor quality roofs. It has launched Hallmark, an accreditation scheme for roofing contractors, under which very high competence standards will have to be met. Supporters of the scheme emphasise that, unlike some others in the construction industry, it is not based on meaningless self-set standards. Instead, it is based on National Vocational Qualifications, and will involve scrutiny by an independent assessor.

Suppliers slated for inferior service

Article Abstract:

Suppliers of materials to the UK construction industry often offer only very poor levels of service, according to a survey of 1,100 surveyors, architects, builders merchants, housebuilders and contractors undertaken by management consultancy Howitt Associates. There is particular concern about the quality of manufacturers' product information, with companies often failing to provide comprehensive technical drawings with each product and not always making their literature immediately available.
