Moonbase Walsall

Article Abstract:

The new bus station in Walsall, West Midlands, England, was designed by architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. The client Centro ran a competition to find the best design for its new 3.7 million pounds sterling bus station. The architects have created a very innovative and modern design. The building is due for completion by the end of 1999. The station is covered by a curving concrete roof supported by 12 steel columns. The roof will be covered by green plants and cowls will be set into the roof to allow light to filter into the building.

Chris Smith

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Chris Smith will appoint the part-time head of a new architecture commission in Apr 1999. This commission will advise government, assess major schemes, promote architecture education, and give special consideration to the regions. Some critics doubt whether the new body and its head will have a radical influence as the commission will take over the duties of existing bodies. However, Smith maintains that he is keen to see the body become an effective champion of architecture.

Ginny's tonic

Article Abstract:

Design should be regarded as a key element in any building project, according to Virginian Bottomley, secretary of state for national heritage. She has made efforts to establish direct communications with architects, and this approach has generally been welcomed. However, they also point out that the department of national heritage has no real power and that she appears to lack real commitment to resolving certain issues.
