Dodging the deal

Article Abstract:

Many of the largest UK housebuilding firms report they prefer to increase the number of apprentices they take on for three year training course rather than become involved in the New Deal. Some housing associations report they have had difficultly in finding New Deal trainees. The New Deal youth employment policy has been introduced by the UK government to increase training for the young unemployed. The main goal of the policy is to get 250,000 people into work. It offers employers subsidies of no more than 75 pounds sterling per week, for each trainee they employ.

Up to date with the rent

Article Abstract:

The private rented sector in the UK has enjoyed a strong revival over the last two decades. This is the result of a fall in the number of people who are willing to enter into the commitment of buying a home as job security has declined. Residential investment is now becoming increasingly attractive to the UK's largest pension funds and life insurance concerns, especially as there is evidence to indicate that residential property returns are higher than those for commercial property.

Local housing companies: the facts

Article Abstract:

The UK government's Estates Challenge Renewal Fund is to offer financial support to a number of local housing companies (LHCs). These will be non-profit-distributing concerns limited by guarantee, with local authorities retaining 49% of the stock. There is general agreement among the political parties that the LHC approach offers considerable flexibility and will attract spending on housing and environmental projects.
