Must try harder

Article Abstract:

A post-occupancy study supported by the UK department of the environment, transport and the regions has revealed a number of negative design features at John Cabot City Technology Centre near Bristol, England. This building, one of the first city technology colleges in the UK, was constructed in 1993 at a cost of 6.3 million pounds sterling. Its gas consumption is lower than the Energy Efficiency Office's benchmarks for secondary schools, but its electricity consumption is higher than the benchmark. There are also problems with controlling temperature, lighting and noise.

The big come down

Article Abstract:

Housebuilders are now tending to use inexpensive concrete roof tiles, rather than the expensive products which were common in the late 1980s. Those which purchase in large quantities have been able to demand considerable discounts. Housebuilders are thus able to make large cost savings in an area which will usually not be noticed by the potential purchaser, who cannot tell the difference between slate and concrete.

Technicolour dreamcoat

Article Abstract:

Housing developers in London, UK, have begun to use advanced polymer-based render systems to achieve bright and attractive facades. Homebuilder Regalian Properties PLC uses the latest renders because they have no maintenance requirement. Colour-impregnated polymers do not require movement joints and, at around 60 pounds sterling per square meter, are no more expensive than traditional sand and cement systems.
