Mad about motorways

Article Abstract:

The Newbury bypass will go ahead, regardless of the protestors who have attempted to stop it, even though many more people in the country wish the building process to continue. Roads are useful to everyone in the modern world, and provide people with ideal access to countryside views which they would otherwise not have had. Wildlife is beginning to return to the sides of large roads such as the M4 between Reading and Swindon, where flowers can be seen growing on the verges.

Nice idea, but not for us

Article Abstract:

Plans by the UK labour government to introduce Welfare to Work trainees could have serious implications on standards of employees in the construction industry. Contractors depend on highly skilled labour, and the introduction of unskilled long-term unemployed could put firms under unnecessary pressure and result in lost contracts. The initiative hopes to place 10,000 unskilled workers into the construction industry to be trained and hopefully given long term employment.

Care for the community

Article Abstract:

The government-backed report 'Towards an Urban Renaissance' is unlikely to have the same effect on city regeneration as market forces. The renaissance of urban London is fuelled by high property prices which force people unable to afford them to seek accommodation the the suburbs. The single piece of legislation that can most help the report's aims be realised is to allow council tenants to buy their own housing.
