Lottery projects out of control

Article Abstract:

The UK National Audit Office (NAO) has been evaluating lottery supported building projects under the control of the Arts Council. The NAO has criticised the work of the project monitors and overspending on 14 projects. The monitors are expected to detect how difficulties, which arise during construction work, are likely to delay the project and increase costs. Some architects have supported the Arts Council pointing out the work can be very complicated and therefore problematic. The Arts Council are likely to be more rigorous in the future, as they have less lottery money to spend.

Waiting in the wings

Article Abstract:

Architect Zaha Hadid has attracted considerable attention with her innovative and radical approach to design. She has gained a strong following among architecture students, but has also been widely criticised. Her work is based on acknowledging the 20th century tradition while also extending the scope of modernism. She is keen to emphasise the need for greater design literacy and the importance of making architecture more understandable for ordinary people.
