Healthy prospects for debt-free HLM

Article Abstract:

Twickenham-based architect HLM is working on major hospital schemes and is looking forward to income growth. The firm has paid of part of a major debt that had threatened its future. The architect was affected by bad debts in 1992 and opted for a company voluntary arrangement procedure, whereby it agreed to pay a percentage of its debts back in two instalments. Salaries were cut and the fleet of company cars was sold off.

Article Abstract:

Many construction industry representatives are now starting to question the effectiveness of arbitration as a dispute resolution method. They claim that it is a lengthy and expensive process, and that taking direct legal action is often more effective. A recent survey indicates that hearings are often very long and costly, and it is now starting to be accepted that a less adversarial adjudication system could be better.

Outward bound

Article Abstract:

In 1996, UK businesses earned 3.5 billion pounds sterling from exports which reduced trade deficit by 16% on building materials and products. The Department of the Environment has asked former managing director of Butterley Brick and exporter Michael Rose to launch a joint initiative with the government to boost export sales. The initiative will concentrate on small and medium-sized businesses.
