Why did the village cross the road?

Article Abstract:

The village of Arkwright Town in Derbyshire, England, is being relocated to a new site 200 yards away because of the threat of a methane gas explosion under the old site. The 400 residents of the village are being moved to the new 15 million pounds sterling site at the expense of RJB Mining (formerly British Coal). In return, the villagers have agreed to 4.25 million t of open-cast mining in the area. The 174 replacement homes have been designed with input from the residents, who decided the final layout. Architect of new Arkwright Town is Brock Carmichael Associates of Liverpool.

Joining the foreign legions: some people might say that expatriates live the life of Riley, with high salaries and the perks of experiencing life in another country

Article Abstract:

The opportunities to work overseas are increasing with DoE figures shwong a rise in overseas orders of 14% in 1994. Expatriates can often earn better salaries but they may have to deal with political alienation and the pressures of loneliness. Some firms use security consultants to brief their staff although many construction workers do not appreciate the risks involved in working overseas. The worst problem is corruption which can place an expatriate in physical dangers. Many contractors are also victims of the theft of building materials.

Style council

Article Abstract:

Developers working on the UK's London Dockland regeneration scheme were obliged to use only recommended architects under an agreement devised by the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC). The LDDC aimed to develop Docklands into a show piece of modern architecture, which would make the area successful in terms of design and desirability. The idea of using only recommended architects is to be taken up by developers regenerating Cardiff Bay, Wales, during 1998.
