Health screening

Article Abstract:

There are doubts about whether construction companies will be willing or able to meet the terms of new Health and Safety Commission (HSC) regulations, due to come into force at the end of 1992, obliging them to assess each computer workstation and provide training for all computer users. There is only limited knowledge in the industry about health and safety regulations on the use of computers, but it is thought that most companies providing good levels of staff care already meet the required standards. Some companies may be tempted to avoid the costs involved in implementing the regulations, but they will make cost savings in the long term if they do comply, as staff health will improve.

Prison Service forced to readvertise

Article Abstract:

The UK Prison Service has been forced to issue a second advertisement for quantity surveying firms to enter into a framework agreement for capital schemes worth up to 150,000 pounds sterling and for capital schemes worth more than 150,000 pounds sterling. It is believed that between eight and 10 of the around 20 quantity surveying firms on the Prison Service's existing framework list did not respond to the first advertisement. Successful applicants will mainly be involved in the refurbishment and extension of existing prisons.

Solar pane = gain

Article Abstract:

The use of photovoltaic (PV) cells to produce solar-cladding is not widely used in the UK, being restricted to mainly experimental or private sector buildings. Commercial builders regard it as too expensive. UK developer Akeler has used solar-cladding in two of its projects, creating one of the largest solar-clad walls in Europe. PV glass offers energy savings and improved heating system efficiency.
