Fraud fiesta

Article Abstract:

One of the ways by which main construction contractors boost their cash flows is to make inflated claims for project materials on site. Most contracts allow contractors to claim reimbursement for stored materials, although some fraudulently inflate their claims. Quantity surveyors can help stamp out the practice by ensuring that contractors have receipts for all materials they store and by referring to the architects who can seek out any discrepancies between their original specifications and the bill of quantities.

The buck stops there

Article Abstract:

Many main contractors in the UK claim that they are putting an end to practices which discriminate against subcontractors. However, the National Specialist Contractors Council's survey for the first quarter of 1997 indicates that many main contractors still use retentions as a way of delaying paying subcontractors. Pay-when-paid clauses are also still very common. Subcontractors report that these clauses, along with Dutch auctions, have a significant impact on their business.
