Article Abstract:

Trafalgar House Construction Regions (TH) is building a 132 bedroom four star hotel for Granada Television in Manchester, England. The project is a design and build contract and involves more detailed design work than is usual. TH, in conjunction with architects and interior designers, has designed all the interior fittings and furnishings to conform to a television theme. Two 19th Century warehouses have been converted to create the hotel. The contractors have had to deal with unforseen structural problems but will make money from the 9.3 million pounds sterling contract.

Pay check: the good news for contractors' employees is that wage rises last year were higher than inflation and benefits remained intact. But the outlook isstill gloomy and the use of temporary contracts is growing

Article Abstract:

A survey shows that wage rises for building employees have outstripped inflation over the past 12 months, with contractors increasing salaries to help boost morale and retain good staff. The highest rises to March 1995 were for planners, estimators and buyers, while the lowest pay rises were for senior quantity surveyors and contracts surveyors. Many projects operate on a project-by-project or weekly basis, although some technical and managerial staff are employed on temporary contracts.
