Article Abstract:

A 7.5 million pounds sterling glasshouse for the National Botanic Garden of Wales is being constructed in the Tywi Valley, West Wales. It will be used to house a wide variety of plants, in a number of zoned areas. Some 50% of the funding has come from the private sector and 50% from the Millennium Commission fund. The first stage of the project will open in Autumn 1998 and the second should be completed by the year 2000. The glasshouse been designed by Foster and Partners. It has been a very difficult project for Byrne Brothers, the concrete contractors, because of its unusual shape.

Article Abstract:

The Commission for Racial Equality is supportive of the mentoring initiative for Asian and black firms in the UK construction industry. The construction Industry Training Board had pointed out the prevalence of racism in the construction industry and the lack of Asian and black workers. Two companies, MDA and Mansell, are offering a mentoring scheme to Asian and black firms. Eme Kalu of Eme Kalu Associates is a participant in the scheme and has already been successfully involved in a joint project with MDA.

Builder to the stars

Article Abstract:

Belgian-born builder Irene Beard numbers several famous people amongst her clients, including royalty and stars of film and music. Beard stumbled into the building trade accidently in 1993, after a promising career in advertising. Beard formed Eaton Gate Builders, together with two brothers who were also involved in the construction industry. She believes in putting the customer first and involving them at every stage of construction.
