Great Lakes: low water, bad press

Article Abstract:

Marinas around the Great Lakes region and trade associations say that many of the media reports since 1999 about the water body's low water levels have been considerably overblown. As a result, boaters are being driven away. An official of the Michigan Boating Industries Assn said that while lower water levels are having a negative effect in some areas, marinas are doing what they can to minimize the inconvenience to boaters, such as investing in dredging projects.

Great lakes study to show boating's impact: the economic impact findings could be an important lobbying tool, says the NMMA

Article Abstract:

Boating lobbyists are confident that the economic impact study, which is taking place in the Great Lakes region, will prove the greater economic impact of recreational boaters as compared to their commercial counterparts. The study will help in determining the economic value of boating to each community in terms of salaries, wages, benefits, taxes and ancillary expenditures.

Lakes may suffer low-water woes

Article Abstract:

Marina operators and other water-related companies expect to lose business in the summer of year 2000 as forecasters warn of the lowest water levels in decades for the Great Lakes region. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, the mild winter and low precipitation in 1999 have caused water levels to drop as much as 2 ft or more in some areas, and between 2-9 in below historic averages. The most affected area seems to be the eastern shores of Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence River.
