E*Trade to set up online brokerage in Germany

Article Abstract:

E*TRADE Group Inc, an online brokerage firm based in Palo Alto, CA, is establishing a presence in Germany in mid-2000, following a similar launch in Sweden. E*TRADE is considering the former East Germany for the probable location of the German operation. With operations in Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Korea and Israel, the company reported sales improvement of 217% in fiscal 1999 to $621 million, but registered a loss of $29 million.

Ebay starts operations in UK, Germany

California-headquartered online aution house ebay expands its European operation with the commencement of the UK ebay site in Mar 1999 and the acquisition of Germany-based Alando, a four-month-old startup. Alando, which was established by brothers Oliver, Alexander and Mark Semwer, currently has 100,000 registered users and selling 160,000 goods after just six months of operation.
