High performance specs needed
Article Abstract:
It is argued that the low-bid concept in roof contracting has driven down product quality along with roof prices. It is therefore no longer uncommon to see roofs being replaced that are less than 10 years. Detractors of higher performance criteria for roofing systems claim that such standards are designed to 'lock out' or eliminate competition. Yet cheap roof systems that meet minimum standards will fall below the threshold of failure much sooner than systems with maximum physical properties. Moreover, replacing roofs every 10 years or so entails a tremendous expense.

Suppliers struggle with price increases
Article Abstract:
Seventeen leading contracters, manufacturers and distributors participated at a panel discussion organized by RSI magazine. The group found that costs of asphalt and petrochemicals used in the manufacture of roofing and insulation products have spiralled upward since Jan 1, 1999. Thus, manufacturers and roofing contractors have been forced to raise their prices. Moreover, higher interest rates have affected the new construction market, which is expected to slow down in 2nd half 2000.
