High-risk job

Article Abstract:

The Railtrack project team, headed by contractor Kier Rail, is facing significant challenges as it replaces a very large area of roof on the railway station in Brighton, England. It has been necessary to install overhead protection, and most of the work is being carried out above this. The southern end of the roof has been completed, while the northern end is still stripped to a framework of wrought-iron trusses. It was necessary to shotblast the entire roof to remove dirt and rust before its condition could be assessed.

Marshalled plans

Article Abstract:

RS(UK) Computer Services has developed a computerised drawing management system. The system registers and records the movements of each drawing used in a construction project. It issues drawings at the correct times to the correct people and keeps a record of all drawing movements. RS(UK) developed and tested the system in conjunction with construction management company, Arnold Project Services which uses it successfully. An on-line amendment facility is under development.

The bright stuff

Article Abstract:

External lighting is becoming more popular in the UK in the 90s as a crime-deterrant. It can be used to attentuate architecture. UK local authorities' expenditure on external lighting increased by 29.6% in between 1990 and 1991. Vandalism is a main problem. Some fittings have vandal-resistant screws and some lighting is recessed internally. Emphasis on energy conservation has resulted in the development of low voltage lighting and reflectors which spread light evenly.
