Hire ground

Article Abstract:

Two hardware rental specialists Short Term Rental Systems and Micro Rent have made agreements with software manufacturers to allow the hiring of software to the UK construction industry. Micro Rent hires a computer-aided design (CAD) system which includes colour monitor and AutoCAD for 595 pounds sterling a month for an annual contract. Advantages are: tax efficiency as companies can deduct the cost from their tax bills; provision for disaster relief; less capital outlay as companies need not invest in hardware until necessary and access to up-to-date hardware and software.

Telecommunications gets on the blower

Article Abstract:

Blown fibre telecommunications technology was developed by British Telecom in 1982 and first used in 1986. Blolite was granted a licence in May 1992 and has developed its own variation. Blown fibre is superior to the traditional optic fibre technique as it is flexible and avoids pre-laying of networks, damage and disruption of other systems. It involves forcing optic fibres through ducts with air blasts. Grids of specially made conduits need only be laid in advance. The specially-coated fibre used is costly.

Tank traps

Article Abstract:

Unvented hot water storage systems are increasing in popularity in Britain but confusion over installation regulations may slow the uptake of the systems. Since they became legal in England and Wales in 1985, unvented systems have been shown to be economical and have a better flow rate than conventional systems. They also have been shown to be safe. The regulations specify they be installed by competent persons but the plumbing industry is divided on the qualifications needed.
