King Kong

Article Abstract:

Foster and Partners have designed an innovative airport terminal building at Chek Lap Kok airport, Hong Kong, to cater for a predicted 34 million passengers in 1998 and 87 million by the year 2040. The building, which cost 800 million pounds sterling, has been made from modular units which have already been increased in number to serve the additional northern runway. The steel roof and glazed walls are constructed in order to balance the amount of light and to maintain the internal temperatures of the terminal building.

Creative tension

Article Abstract:

The Foyer Gallery, a 130 sq mt, 500,000 pounds sterling canopied gallery extension to the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in Farnham, England, is a raised transparent glass pavilion. Designed by Robin Snell, it is in classic Miesian style. It features a tensile fabric roof supported by an unusual array of steel hoops. It was not possible to push the tensile structure up from below or pull it from above, so a system similar to an umbrella was devised.

Chips with everything

Article Abstract:

Some Japanese housebuilders are now including a range of automated features in their designs, offering 'home robots' which support the lifestyle of the individuals living in the house. Some robots can cook, while others have roles in fitness and security. Home automation could have particular advantages in Japan, where homes tend to be very cramped, but are still not widely used as they tend to be not very user-friendly.
