Life Magazine is sweeps' first apparent victim

Time Inc has confirmed its planned suspension of the May 2000 issue of 'Life' magazine. Company executives' decision to cut circulation commitments is a part of strategy to cope with financial difficulties brought about by the collapse of the sweepstake business. Sweepstake companies used to provide 9% of the advertisement revenues of the magazine but this changed when they started to perform poorly because of government scrutiny and bad publicity.

'Reformed' spam king joins nemesis

Article Abstract:

Sanford Wallace, who has help swamp the Internet with millions of unsolicited commercial e-mail message, has joined forces with Pete Wellborn, a lawyer/expert consultant who is a potential witness in a couple of anti-spam lawsuits. Wellborn, who is being charged $200 per hour by Wallace for consulting work, arranged a settlement for Internet service provider Earthlink, which gained a $2-million judgment versus Philadelphia-based Cyber Promotions, Wallace's company. Meanwhile, Wallace's change of heart is being scrutinized by other industry players.

Hanover realignment ups internet ante

Article Abstract:

Hanover Direct Inc of Weehawken, NJ, will restructure itself into two Internet focused divisions to increase its current market share. According to President and CEO Rakesh Paul, the integrated catalog company will create a brand marketing division and a Web service division that will focus on brands and back-end fulfillments, respectively. With the company's re-alignment, Hanover expects to increase its customers via the online catalog shopping service and the so-called online third-party fulfillment market and front-end user services market.
