Article Abstract:

The concept of siting a pond on a flat roof to reduce the cost of cooling the building has been criticised by some experts who suggest the roof will leak. Fulcrum Consulting has influenced the designers of the new conservation centre at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust to incorporate a 100-125 mm pool of water on a flat roof. Pipes from the side of the pool of water feed underfloor coils and return warm water mixed with glycol to the pond for cooling. Glycol is added to the water to prevent it freezing. The pond has to be in the shade to stop the water becoming too warm.

Article Abstract:

The National Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, will be a state-of-the art sports stadium which, when it opens in 1999, will be one of only five stadia in the world to have retractable roofs. The National Stadium is being formed from the 114 million pounds sterling refit of Cardiff Arms Park. The retractable roof will allow the grass to grow in sunlight during good weather, while protecting the surface during poor weather. The National Stadium will also be used for rock concerts, when the retractable roof will protect spectators and performers.

Buried leisure

Article Abstract:

Ove Arup has constructed a 250 million pounds sterling velodrome in Berlin, Germany. This facility, which forms the central element of the city's unsuccessful bid to host the 2000 Olympics, has 5,500 seats, but only the top 7 mt protrudes above ground level. It is 20 mt deep and 150 mt in diameter, with 16 structural columns supporting a 3,000 tonne roof. Its scale is very impressive, but it was not actually very complicated to design or build.
