Long-suffering Swindon still waiting

Article Abstract:

The Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon, England, one of the first hospitals to be built in the country after the second world war, is in a very poor state of repair. It is creating health and fire safety difficulties, and its environment is not conducive to the recovery of patients. The government had promised that a new Private Finance Initiative hospital would be on site in summer 1996, but work has not started yet. It has been decided not to use the existing site, where there are access problems, and a site near Junction 15 of the M4 may now be used.

New Bart's to include hotel and shops

Article Abstract:

The development of a 10 ha site in the East End of London, England, will include a replacement for St Bartholomew's hospital. The 260 million pounds sterling scheme could also encompass a large hotel, 'hostel-type' rooms for hospital patients and a shopping centre. This is the largest private finance initiative hospital scheme put out to tender so far, with the winning team likely to receive 30 million pounds sterling a year from the Royal Hospitals NHS Trust for the use of the facility.
