Coast Guard revives factory inspections

Article Abstract:

The Coast Guard will revive its boatbuilding facility inspections after having been reallocated $2 million in federal funds in 1999 for such program. The boatbuilding plant-visit program, which was scrapped years ago due to lack of funding, began after the passage of the Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971 and was designed to ensure that boatbuilders understand federal safety standards. The Coast Guard plans to use the new money to hire an independent entity for the program by the end of 1999.
