M&E firm meets slump head on

Article Abstract:

Mechanical and electrical (M&E) contractor, Willian Steward Group is preparing for the worst effects of the recession. The group's chief exec, Mike Jacobs claims M&E work has fallen by 30% in 1991-92. and that prices are falling to uneconomic levels. He expects the group's profits to fall from the 1991 figure of 1 million pounds sterling. The group has closed its loss making North American operation and pulled out of some overseas markets although it is still strong in Africa. Formed in 1935, William Steward is privately owned and employs 1650 staff.

Article Abstract:

UK retailer J Sainsbury has been working on a store design blueprint employing CAD (computer-aided design) since 1991. The information was compiled on 2 CAD sustems, AutoCAD and Intergraph and archived on a database. Eventually the blueprint will be available on discs to be downloaded on indivisual CAD stations. Currently the blueprint consists of 40 binders including 11,500 drawings. Discs will speed up operations and approval time between consultants. About 20 new supermarkets are built annually incorporating about 500 design changes.
