Article Abstract:
The UK Construction Industry Board is aware of the need to encourage construction companies to pay more attention to the possible impact of their activities on people living close to construction sites. For this reason, it is to launch the Considerate Constructors Scheme in Jul 1997. It hopes that it will be possible for compliance with this code of practice to be monitored by local authority building control officers. At present, there are many complaints from people living near construction sites about problems such as noise, dust and dirt.

It has become increasingly common in the UK for people to form their own construction consultancies. Indeed, 52,800 small businesses were formed in the construction sector in 1997, up by 40% from 1995 and 1996. It is common for these businesses to be sole trading operations, with women accounting for one in four start-ups. There are a number of organizations to which people setting up in business on their own can turn for support, but many people find obtaining advice rather confusing.
