Article Abstract:

The redevelopment of the Britannic Tower has been finally agreed after 24 months of discussion, with work due to start in Oct 1998 and be completed by Dec 2000. The building developer is Wates City of London Properties. Architect Santiago Calatrava had redesigned the building to increase its height to 204 metres from 120.5 metres but he resigned from the project in May 1997. The new architects are Sheppard Robinson and the main contractor is Mowlem. The building work is planned to cost 300 million pounds sterling.

South Bank no show

Article Abstract:

The Arts Council has decided not to allocate funding for the planned 135 million pounds sterling refurbishment of the South Bank Centre in London, England. Many observers have been very critical of the fact that it has taken a long time to reach a decision on this project, during which time high costs have been incurred. Some people feel that the decision not to give funding was politically motivated, with the government already having made large lottery awards to the Millennium Dome and the Royal Opera House.
