Article Abstract:

The staff restaurant in the headquarters building of Tarmac PLC has been redeveloped on the site of the former company gym at a cost of 250,000 pounds sterling. The new restaurant has been designed to seat 180 people in a bistro setting, it is open from 8am to 8pm daily. A bar has been incorporated into the new design and the whole area had been painted in bright colors. Employees' families are able to use the new cafe and 50% more staff have already used the bistro since it opened in Apr 1997. Staff have been been given membership to a local gym to replace the demolished gym.

Article Abstract:

Barratt Developments has seen strong financial recovery since Sir Lawrie Barratt returned to head the company two-and-a-half years after retiring at the end of 1988. It has been able to move from a loss of 100 million pounds sterling to a profit of more than 52 million pounds sterling in only five years, and achieved house sales of 7,025 in 1996. It aims to reach sales of 11,000 a year by the end of the 1990s. Sir Lawrie Barratt is highly respected for being extremely hard working, and has been voted 1997 Construction Personality of the Year.

The knight's tale

Article Abstract:

Tarmac Chief Executive Sir Neville Simms, winner of the 1998 Building Award for Personality of the Year, has made a very significant contribution to the UK construction industry. He was National Contractors Group Chmn, and has been Major Contractors Group Chmn since 1996. He places strong emphasis on his company's commitment to the local community, and has raised money for the Macmillan cancer relief charity. He has gained a strong reputation as an astute businessman who is willing to take advice and takes time to think carefully about deals.
