PFI housing

Article Abstract:

North East Derbyshire district council needed to find ways of funding the construction of new council accommodation. They worked with South Yorkshire Housing Association and arranged a scheme involving a private finance initiative. The council looked at the needs in the area before going ahead with the scheme, as they had to ensure they would be a continual demand for the new houses. The houses on the Holmewood estate were designed to cope with mobility difficulties and have a high energy efficiency rating. Funding of 1.7 million pounds sterling was supplied by Dexia Municipal Bank.

Less grant, more homes

Article Abstract:

The UK government has announced that it is to reduce the social housing grant rate to 54% for 1997 to 1998. It is also hoping to see rents cut by 4% in real terms in the period to 2000. The significant decline in long-term interest rates means that it should be possible to cut both the grant rate and rents. Accepted bids for 1997 indicate that the average grant level will probably be between 41% and 43%, meaning that more homes will be constructed than previously anticipated.
