Article Abstract:

Bentley Systems' new computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing software, MicroStation J, comprises a range of products. It represents a move away from the traditional format of base platform plus add-ons. Bentley is aiming MicroStation J at range of customers, with TriForma being the software for architects. Another major change from earlier products is the switch to the Java environment. The advantage of this is that users will be able to download, from the Internet, designs constructed using Bentley's Java language. However, the current lack of Java object libraries is a drawback.

Architectural Classic Edition Drafting Pack, available from Menzies Engineering Design, is displayed on a floating toolbar which has nine icons. There are also further pop-up menus containing each of the graphical symbols. The symbols are kept as blocks on insertion, and the user can move, rotate and scale them as a single unit. The pop-up menus contain symbols for furniture, landscaping and electrical services, and there are also extensive menus for fixtures and fittings, structural steelwork and mechanical services.

PowerDraft does include some 3D functions, albeit basic. PowerDraft provides up to 63 levels, or layers, of information, and offers associative and intuitive dimensioning. One of PowerDraft's strongest features is its references files.
