Article Abstract:

The construction of the 15 million pounds sterling Clissold Leisure Centre, Hackney, London, England, has proved more challenging than anticipated which has led to the contract being almost 12 months late, by the time it is completed in 2000. The design of the building takes into consideration the needs of local people in the area, such as the Orthodox Jewish people. The new leisure centre includes two swimming pools, a gym, squash courts, a cafe and a creche. Architect Stephen Hodder has designed an innovative building which has an aluminium roof supported by Y shaped columns.

What's going on inside the dome?

Article Abstract:

Participants in the UK's Millennium Dome project hold different views about how good the exhibition will be, and whether it will be ready on time and within budget. Some maintain that everything is proceeding well. Others point to confusion and change concerning the design and design schedules for the 14 zones within the dome. They say that only some of the zones, which have themes including communication, play, and the environment, will have excellent designs. A significant factor in the design problems may be the differing expectations of designers and sponsors.

Planners to get bigger say on design

Article Abstract:

The UK government is soon to issue the revised Planning Guidance Note 1, which is likely to strongly support the principle that planners should extend the use of design and development briefs for the most important sites. At present, such briefs are used mainly in conservation areas, and are often not taken into account when planning applications are assessed. This approach will give local authority planners greater control over design.
