Plugging the gaps

Article Abstract:

The Electrical Contractors' Association is lobbying the DOE (Department of the Environment) to include electrical installations in the Building Regulations. Other European countries lack wiring practices standards exposing UK buildings to hazards. Opponents believe that this would cause problems for local authority monitoring of buildings. Staff retraining would be necessary. Water authorities are also seeking to include their byelaws into the Building Regulations. The DOE wants to make 'approved persons' responsible for the self-certification of building design as introduced in Scotland on Nov 1 1992.

North by Norwest

Article Abstract:

Norwest Holst's Quarry House project in Leeds has received criticism from anti-design and build objectors, particularly the Royal Fine Art Commission who were against the form of procurement. The building is on a prime site overlooking the city, and the design and build team had to concentrate on making such a large building look attractive, with the aim of making it a flagship for design and build projects.

Clad tidings

Article Abstract:

The Centre for Window and Cladding Technology published a standard for curtain walling on Feb 4 1993. There is only 1 UK wall cladding company, Briggs Amasco Curtainwall. European companies have the majority of the UK market share because of: low investment by UK companies; poor quality; bad workmanship; lack of design and engineering abilities; lack of training standards and the lack of a code of practice.
