Poor reflection: serious damage limitation was required to convert a defective, low-grade mirror factory into a high-tech computerised library for the University of North London

Article Abstract:

The University of North London's new learning resource centre is located in a three storey mirror factory close to the main university building. However it required considerable upgrading as it was alow-grade industrial building. The conversion included increasing floor space with the addition of a mezzanine floor and the removal of the top floor half barrel vaults which soaked up both sunshine and rain. The new projecting eaves now give shade to the south and west facing walls

Dumont's clean slate

Article Abstract:

Railway engineer Normande Dumon has successfully reopened a slate quarry near his home in Quebec. The Glendyne quarry, which consists of a slate vein measuring 65 mt deep by 2 km long, produces high-quality roofing slates, similar to Welsh slates, and exports to the UK, US and France. Glendyne has a turnover of some two million pounds sterling/year.

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the use of timber for the cladding of buildings. The design of a store by Chetwood Associates which features natural unfinished American oak as a cladding material is discussed.
