Post modern

Article Abstract:

Architect Alan J. Smith has been responsible for converting the Victorian head post office building in Newcastle, England, into a mixed-used development. A 1,082 sq mt office and studio for Smith's own practice has already been completed, along with 12 luxury flats, 36 basement parking spaces and a turfed roof terrace. Work has begun on a further 1,548 sq mt of lettable office space, and there are also plans for an art gallery, a restaurant and three artists' studios. It is intended that the Red Box development will revive the city's historic centre.

Access all areas

Article Abstract:

Architects face many challenges when redesigning listed historic buildings to comply with the terms of the UK's Disability Discrimination Act 1995. These buildings often have many flights of stairs, and are therefore unsuitable for easy conversion for disabled access. Furthermore, any alterations must be officially approved. However, it is generally possible to find an acceptable solution. National Lottery funding is available to allow accessibility to be made part of a general refurbishment of historic public buildings.
