Article Abstract:

The design of a 596,000 pounds sterling visitors centre on the Isle of Mull in Scotland's Western Isles was carried out with the aid of an environmental modelling software package. The Fionnphort Exhibition and Visitors' Centre has to cope with extreme weather conditions, especially wind. Architect for the scheme, John Renshaw Architects, contracted consulting engineer Buro Happold to help with the design of the centre's heating and insulation. Buro Happold's EDSL thermal analysis modelling system was used to design the building's windbreak.

Fire alarm

Article Abstract:

Plans to introduce a European Commission (EC) standard of rating for products used in the construction industry have come under fire from experts who claim the methods used to determine fire resistance are inappropriate. The EC plans to make the ratings standard by the year 2000, in all participating member states. The fire resistance test was devised by the Regulator Group, in response to a lack of universally acceptable test. Critics of the test suggest inadequate heat is applied, resulting in an unrealistic simulation of fire.

Court of appeal

Article Abstract:

There are two distinct elements to the law courts designed by Richard Rogers Partnership for Bordeaux, France. The 27 million pounds sterling court complex is made up of five storeys of office accommodation and seven timber courtroom pods. The pods are situated on stilts above a two-storey office podium. The development, which has been on site since 1995, will act as an annexe for the existing courthouse, constructed in the 19th century. The design has required a number of complex construction skills.
