A new hospital for mentally ill people has been constructed in Bedfordshire, England, at a cost of 7 million pounds sterling. The development includes a 24-bed unit for elderly mentally ill patients, and a 24-bed unit for acute admissions. R Durtnell and Sons of Kent designed and built the buildings using the CLASP system. First born

Article Abstract:

Hospital staff at the Friary Community Hospital, Richmond, North Yorkshire, England, felt the private finance initiative was a very good scheme as it allowed hospital staff to participate in the design work. The building was formally a boarding school and it cost 3.5 million pounds sterling to convert it into a hospital. It was very important for all parties involved in the construction work to communicate regularly. The site had originally been a 13th century chapel which resulted in an archeologist becoming involved in the project.

UK firms build amid bullets in Gaza

Article Abstract:

Construction of the 23 million pounds sterling European Gaza Hospital in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, Israel, was hindered by local problems such as political strikes and local rebellions. The virtually completed hospital was handed over in September 1996. The main contractors were Mivan Overseas from Antrim in Northern Ireland. The consultancy team was headed by Architects Co-Partnership of Potters Bar, UK, with the team winning the contract because of its use of local labour and materials.
