Room to grow

Article Abstract:

The remodelling of a childrens nursery for the Thomas Coram Foundation has proved difficult particularly in achieving good quality brick work. The project is due to be completed in Oct 1998, two months later than planned. The 2.2 million pounds sterling project included adding three conservatories along one side of the building, to give more space for the children on the limited site. The conservatories have wavy roofs to aid ventilation. The 1930s building had to provide office space on its upper floor and a nursery on the ground floor. The building was redesigned by CGHP Architects.

Peckham rise

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Alsop & Stormer has been responsible for designing a new 4.5 million pounds sterling library for Peckham, London, England. The library, due to open in summer 1999, is part of the 260 million pounds sterling Peckham Partnership regeneration scheme. It is 12 mt off the ground, above a double-height space containing three prefabricated timber pods in which are located a meeting room, a children's play area and an Afro-Caribbean literature centre. It is supported on seven thin hollow steel cylinders that have reinforcement bars running down their entire length.

Waiting for the sine

Article Abstract:

The design of a new, 2.6 million pounds sterling footbridge across the River Thames in the Docklands area of London, England, has caused some difficult problems for construction and engineering contractors. The curving bridge, commissioned by the London Docklands Development Corp. and designed by Chris Wilkinson Associates, has four main elements, including two 36 mt raking masts and 28 cables, with a steel cylinder that supports the deck. Construction and installation of the bridge has been delayed by two months because of the bridge's configuration.
