Shippers prefer UPS rate increase vs. FedEx surcharge

Article Abstract:

A study done by investment bank Bear, Stearns and Company Inc reveals that direct marketers prefer United Parcel Service's (UPS) rate increases rather than Federal Express' (FedEx) surcharges. UPS implemented a 3.5% rate increase for its express services, including Next Day Air, Second-Day Air and 3-Day Select Commercial Air. These adjustments would take effect on Feb 7, 2000. On the other hand, FedEx imposed a 3% surcharge on domestic and international package products. The study done by Bear Stearns showed that FedEx customer resent the total increase because they are hit upfront.
