Shops, offices and flats from a Tyneside dump

Article Abstract:

Architects William Gower Partnership have developed plans for the mixed-use re-development of a derelict site by the River Tyne in Gateshead, England. These have been commended by the local authority and by central government but there are many problems to be addressed. The plans include 50 one-bedroomed apartments, offices, shops and a hotel. Problems concerning the site include the fact that it has eight owners, it may be contaminated and it would require an archaeological investigation. These issues make the scheme commercially unviable unless special funding can be obtained.

Twenty for 2000

Article Abstract:

UK housebuilders are developing innovative and futuristic projects in 1998, leading up to the year 2000. Architects are using new ideas to create houses with more living space and which are environmentally friendly. US houses have given UK housebuilders ideas such as dens and basements, which are widely used elsewhere but not in the UK. More windows and conservatories create a feeling of space, while the addition of en-suite bathroom facilities improve living standards. The UK public would welcome innovative design ideas, according to a survey of house buyers.
